MCR Rules

Rules of the game

The official Mahjong Competition Rules are laid down in the green booklet (s).

On the website of the Mahjong Association (NMB) you will find an MCR game rule translation of the green booklet

In our club we use the following method (pdf) for the last stone to clearly indicate from where and/or from whom the last stone taken was taken.

Cheat sheets

For some it is easier than for others. Remembering all the combinations and the corresponding points. Instead of going through the green booklet completely, there are many cheat sheets. Handy A4 sheets with all the fans made accessible in a more or less handy way. Well, and ours is of course the most handy, we think ;-)

If you want to support our association, we can send you a nice laminated copy or even a personalized and laminated copy if desired. For a reasonable fee excl. postage.

Mind sport

The point is to maximize the (fast) chance of Mahjong with the first 13 tiles received and to keep the possibilities flexible for as long as possible. Insight into the chances also helps the player to switch from an offensive game to a more defensive attitude at the right time and perhaps back again if luck turns. Prevent high profit, fast low profit or loss of points by aiming for a draw.

Not only one's own possibilities but also those of the other three opponents should be kept in mind. What does the opponent take? ... what do the opponents have in open combinations? and what have the opponents put away when?

Our association is investigating the Duplicate Mahjong format for MCR, a way of playing that reduces the luck factor even further, and makes it possible to compare results of players and teams. As is also common in Duplicate format Bridge.

The NMB has a document (in Dutch): MCR strategy - the shortest way to Hu!

There is also a strategy publication by none other than world champion Mai Hatsune: World Class Mahjong
